Scratchboard Project

1. Find an Image

Video 1: Image Preparation

  • Watch the video and complete the directions.

    • What are you finding a picture of?________________________________________

    • What does it need to have? _____________ why? ____________________________

    • Make sure you can see the direction of the fur or feathers.

    • Where do you save your picture? _________________________________________

    • What is the size requirement for Google?________________________________

3. Trace Major Outlines

Video 3: Outline the Major Shapes

  • Get a scratchboard.

  • Write your name on the back.

  • Tape your image to the black side of the scratchboard.

  • Begin outlining ALL of the shapes with your pencil. Press hard enough that it makes marks on your scratchboard.

    • EVERYTHING

    • Teeth

    • Eyes

    • Different shades in the fur

  • Have a classmate check your work.

  • Show Ms. Pfister

2. Practice Your Lines

Video 2: Sketch it Out

  • Begin your Sketch

  • What are you focusing on in your drawing? ___________________ and ________________ of the fur.

  • Gesture the major shapes starting with the largest. Don’t make the outline perfect.

  • Practice drawing the fur:

    • Start in one area and draw the fur in the direction it is going as well as the correct length.

  • Fill in the whole sketch.

  • Show Ms. Pfister.

4. Start Scratching

  • Get a scratchboard tool.

  • What corner should you start with when scratching?____________________________

  • What happens if your hands touch the scratchboard?___________________________

  • Take the picture off of your scratchboard.

  • Begin scratching. Make sure you are looking at the length and direction of the fur!

  • What parts of the image are you scratching? _____________________________________

Which parts do you leave black?________________________________________________

5. How to Do Eyes

Video 5: Eyes and Nose

  • Use circular motions to take away the parts you don’t want. You can make tiny dots or scratch all of it off.
