Steps 1-2

Step 3: Ideas & Techniques

Directions:

  1. If you didn't, watch the videos below to learn how to make a coil, slab, and pinch pot. You will not be able to make anything with clay if you don't know these techniques.

  2. Between each video you should practice what you learned. So watch the coil video, then go make a coil, come back watch the slab video, then go make a slab, repeat for other videos and watch as many times as needed.

  3. Brainstorm the three different ideas that include your personal interests that you will use in your project. For example, in my project I like the outdoors, so I painted a picture I took of mountains on my mug.

  4. Then think about the techniques you will need to complete the project you picked in step 1. Circle the ones you will use and then move to step 4.

If you have made it this far,  you have learned basic building techniques and have finished your sketch and plan for making your clay project. Now it is time for you to follow the plan you made and build your project! Here are some tips:

  • Make sure you wedge your clay.

  • Use your sketch and plan to help you build.

  • Make sure to score, slip, & smooth all pieces of clay together.

  • Start building your big shapes first, then any carvings.

  • Take your time

  • pay attention to what your hands are doing and move them slowly as you work.

  • Add attachments last.

  • Do a final craftsmanship check before turning in your work.

  • Make sure your personal interests are included somewhere on your piece.

  • Write your FULL NAME on the bottom using a carving tool.
