Step 2: Artist Research

Directions:

  • Research artists who work in the material you chose and answer the question for step 2 on your handout.

Tips:

  • This might mean a google search, looking on Youtube or looking in books until you find an artist that uses your chosen material. 

  • Make sure the artist is someone you are actually interested in. Why do you like their art? What is your favorite piece by them and why?

Step 3: Research & Technique Study

Directions:

​For this section, you need to RESEARCH and PRACTICE how to use your chosen material. 

​​

  • Google search techniques to try using the material you chose "__________________ Techniques"

  • LOOK for an article or video that tells you how to use the material you chose.

  • Practice techniques the article suggests on a blank piece of paper or in your sketchbook.

  • Be specific in your search, for example:

    • You might search how to use the material AND tips for making what you want to make. ​

    • If you want to do a portrait in charcoal, look up how to do that. If you want to paint a landscape, look up how to paint a landscape.

Step 4: Artist Study

Directions:

  • Make a practice project using the techniques you've learned and tips from the artist you studied.

Tips:

  • make it small 

  • explore and try out the new things you've learned so you are ready for your final project

  • Make sure it doesn't take more than 1-2 class periods

  • You can copy an artists work using videos or do practice versions (sketch practice) for a final idea exploration.

  •  Think about how you will use the techniques in your final project. 

Tips

  1. Pay attention to how the artist uses their tools and materials.

  2. Pay attention to what colors the artist starts with.

  3. Pay attention to how the artist approaches the composition.

Step 5: Envision and Sketch

Directions:

  • Get our your Sketchbook.

  • Watch the video on the right.

  • Follow the directions to create your 3-4 sketches in your sketchbook.

 

Tips:​

  • What do you want your final artwork to look like?

  • collect any pictures you will need

  • Remember, a sketch is a rough draft and it’s primary goal is to help you problem solve your project and get your ideas out on paper!

    • Your Experiences or Memories

    • What you See

    • What you Feel

    • Your Traditions or Culture

    • Techniques you want to try or experimentation

  • You must get feedback during your process
